Who is a.a. clifford?
THE MAN
a.a. clifford was born in 2003 upon the publication of his first novel, "SexLife." He was created from a frustration and desire of writer Gary Hardwick, who at that time was writing, television, movies, directing films and publishing thrillers under his own name. I was coming up with these fantastic stories I wanted to write but they were nothing like the books for which I had become known, gritty urban thrillers. ("Cold Medina," "Color of Justice") And so, I tabled them for years until I had to publish them by creating a separate identity. While I am practical and logical, a.a. clifford is not. He is very impulsive and suspicious about everything in life. He question everything from God to the price of bacon. I realized that mr. clifford was an excellent outlet for all of the things I wanted to say but could not for various reasons.
THE NAME
a.a. clifford's lowercase spelling is a homage to writer e.e. cummings who did the same. It is glaringly understated in its presentation and say two things at once: "I am here, but don't think too much of it." The name is composed of the middle names of my family Anette Alexander and my middle name, clifford.
THE MISSION
a.a. clifford has published 5 novels fo say and various short works. The goal is to entertain and enthrall, shock and upset people as much as I can. My first to novels, "SexLife and "Escape To Sex" are really one long novel about the meaning of life contemplated through the process of procreation. While I want everyone to read my works, "SexLife" is not a book for non-thinkers. It is dense, imaginative, profound and uninviting to anyone who likes things easy. It was read over a summer by a teaching assistant in Minnesota who gave it to his professor who contacted me and added it to a course on North American fiction. It has been called "brilliant" "confusing" and "shocking." It is all of those thing and what's more it is beautiful. I wrote the last line of the book first, then the first line and then I filled in the middle and that is how I write all of these novels now.
THE END
If you read "Cold Medina," Gary Hardwick's first novel and "SexLife" a.a. clifford's first novel, you cannot tell they are written by the same person and in a way they are not. "Cold Medina" comes from my life as a child of the inner city in Detroit and it explores a Shakespearean story of murder, family and betrayal. "SexLife" dares to turn the entire world on hits head asking why there is a world in the first place. a.a. clifford as a lot more to say and I invite readers to experience it all.
